Spreading Altruism

What We Did:

For our BLJ project we decided to show altruism. We planned to do this by helping others stay positive when they returned to school after their long breaks. To do this we decided upon a simple yet effective method: writing happy welcome back messages on sticky notes and posting them on people's lockers. We realized that although such messages may be short and stating the obvious, it is surprisingly these small acts of kindness to others that lift people's sprits up. Hence through these short messages we hoped to spread optimism and strength as students once again face the stress and rigors of the rest the school year.

Reactions:

We stuck some of these notes on different lockers and caught some reactions of people finding the notes. They looked happy when they read the notes, and it was nice to see that just from a small note with a few simple words we could make people smile. It impacted them positively by knowing that there are nice people who really do care. Not only the recipients, however, we were also impacted while doing the project because it allowed for us to understand the value and significance of a simple act of kindness and just how much strength it can bring upon oneself. These small acts of kindness by demonstrating an altruistic mind can indeed have a large impact on someone you don’t even know that well, so why not just say a few nice words to people once in a while. It may make the day for them.
